Hello, and good morning. I want to welcome you to another episode with the Body By Patrick podcast. I’m your host, Patrick Ocheni. In today’s episode, I want to talk to you about two main things that affect how quickly you lose body fat, overall body fat.
It could be belly fat. It could be back fat. It doesn’t matter.
By the way, guys, just to let you know, there’s no such thing as spot reduction.
What does that mean?
That means that you cannot decide which part of your body the fat comes off of first. Your body determines where the fat comes from based on how much overall fat you have on your body.
One of the biggest mistakes people make in the gym, in the quest to achieve body transformation is they compare themselves to other people.
They say, I started working at the same day as Jessica, as John four weeks ago, but Jessica or John are far ahead of me than I am.
What is going on?
Am I doing something?
And the answer is, not necessarily.

So what I want to do today is, again, share with you two main things that determine how quickly you lose body fat. That way, you focus just on you and you stop comparing yourself to other people.
I’ve broken it down to two main category of things that affect how quickly you lose body fat.
Category number one is, things that are beyond your control. You just cannot control it. And, category number two is, things that are within your control.
I want to start with things that you can not control that affect your ability to lose body fat quickly.
The first thing is your age.
You cannot control your age.
Your age truly does influence how quickly you are able to lose weight. For example, when I was 18 years old, my metabolism was off the charts.
But now, I’m 40 years old. My metabolism is still there, but it’s not as efficient as it was when it was 18 years old even if I am doing the same level of activity.
That’s just way life is.
The older you become, the slower your metabolism.
The other thing you cannot control is your gender. And, Science has proven that male are able to burn fat, in general, quicker than females because of our body chemistry.
If I have two clients, client number “A” is a male, 40 years old. Client number “B” is a female ,40 years old.
Let’s say everything else being equal, well, client number A is more likely to lose more body fat quicker than client number B.
The other thing that affects your ability or how quickly you lose fat is your genetics. There is actually something called, your genetic potential.
What does that mean?
That means, no matter how much you work out, you’re never going to be as lean as somebody else.
For example, no matter how much I play basketball, no matter how much I train my body, I’ll never be able to jump as high as LeBron James.
It’s just not going to happen, because genetically we’re different.
Finally, in terms of things that are just beyond your control, is your health status.
Unfortunately, things happen in life whereby our health could potentially get compromised. For example, somebody that might be stricken with some disease like cancer, their ability to lose fat is far different from someone else who does not have cancer.
Those are the four main things that affect your ability to lose fat when you’re trying to get in shape.
Now, category number two are things that you can control.
The first thing that you can control, if you’re trying to lose fat, is your lifestyle.
What are some things that fall into that category?
The first one is, your environment.
What kind of environment you have set up at home?
Is it an environment that’s filled with stress?
Is it an environment that’s filled with all kinds of junk food?
For example, if you live in a very stressful environment, guess what, stress has been known to create or release cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a stress hormone and cortisol by nature creates negative things in the body, and one of them being makes you store fat.
Another thing that could fall under the lifestyle situation is, your job.
What kind of job do you have, do you hate your job? If you hate your job, more than likely you’ll feel not so happy all the time and your mood does influence how stressed out you feel, which influences the hormones released in your body, which influences how quickly you’re able to lose fat.
You get the point?
The other thing is, your eating habits. Your eating habits highly influences how quickly you’re able to lose fat.
One of the mistakes people make is they’re like, oh, I work out all the time. So I should be able to go eat whatever I want.
No, no, no, no!
Negative, negative, negative!
That is so not true.
You cannot eat whatever you want just because you’re working out, it doesn’t add up.
It doesn’t make sense.
The other thing is, your fitness level.
If I have somebody that’s 400 pounds, they want to lose fat versus somebody that has 200 pounds that want to lose fat. And the 400 pound person has never worked out in their life versus the 200 pound person that has been working for the last three months.
Well, guess what? Their ability to lose fat will be different.
Finally, the type of training program that you are on.
You’ve got to always make sure that your training program support your ability to burn fat.
There you have it guys, the two main categories of things that affect how quickly you’re able to lose fat.
